Scalars - Literal

Notice two things:
The number 4 is represented as itself,
The string "cat" is represented by enclosing it in quotes.

These are called numeric and string "literals," respectively.

Once you have changed the value of a variable, the same or similar operations may have unintended consequences:

    $foo += 4; # $foo is now 4. You killed the "cat"
