Perl has a special character sequence, '=>', which represents a comma and has the special magical property of automatically quoting the thing on the left:

    %baz = (4 => "str", cat => "str");

This "syntactic sugar" has the benefit of creating a stronger visual correlation between the pairs, as well as eliminating some punctuation characters.
