A Diversion Into the Notion of Type

Notice now that because of the auto-quoting feature of the "fat-arrow," the 4 is a string.  But frequently in perl, the "type" of a thing does not really matter.

Why have I been putting the word "type" in scare quotes?

Because in Perl, type does not have the same implication as in other languages.
