And now aliasing.  Sometimes, you want a certain variable to be known by a different name.  You could create a new one of those and assign it the value, but they wouldn't really be the same thing:

    $duck = $foo; # $duck is now 4
    $duck += 4; # $duck is 8, but $foo is still 4
